Hello and greetings from Center for Music therapy Education and Research, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth I am Bhuvaneswari Ramesh, Faculty of Center for Music therapy Education and Research that I will refer to as CMTER from here on. My podcast today will be on the use of music as therapy with a focus on Salutogenesis and is titled “Music Therapy for Mind Body & Soul- A Salutogenic Focus” Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth is a health sciences university that bridges modern science and complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) to bring about a holistic arena to education, research & the most important area of clinical practice. Center for Music Therapy Education & Research (CMTER) is one of the many innovative ideas of SBV aimed at bringing about health to its optimum and healing of patients with a Salutogenic focus. I am going to start by explaining what is salutogenesis and then flow into how it is synchronised into the use of music and the Indian traditional healing systems that are incorporated here at SBV. Salutogenesis is an approach focusing on factors that support human health and well-being, rather than on factors that cause disease (pathogenesis). More specifically, it is concerned with the relationship between health, stress, and coping. A theory documented by Aaron Antonovsky in the 1970s I quote his words on the model, “we are coming to understand health not as the absence of disease, but rather as the process by which individuals maintain their sense of coherence and ability to function in the face of changes in themselves and their relationships with their environment.” What is Sense of coherence?????Sense of coherence answers three questions Comprehensibilty, Manageability &Meaningfulness. The three components are the way to take care of oneself during a stressful situation  Comprehensibility, is the answer to “do I understand my stressors and the situations that cause stress in me?The answer to this question influences our comprehension towards a step towards handling it.  Manageability, gives us the answer to the resources available to handle the stressor According to Antonovsky, manageability required general resistance resources (GRRs)” which are the resources available that will help to cope with the stressors and challenges in life. • adaptability at various levels such as biochemical, physical, psychological and socio-cultural levels; • unconditional support/bonding that is deep and meaningful bonding with near and dear ones in our family and friends; and • support from committed institutions that may help the person with his/her community. A third body that would give options that may be unknown to people.  Meaningfulness, answers the question, if we would make the effort to use the resources to cope with the stressor. This is a major area that will help cope with stressors because meaningfulness is a very personalized/subjective concept as everyone has a unique set of personal beliefs, values and/or experiences. Now, here is a distinct connection between music therapy, salutogenesis & our own traditional healing practices. As a natural process body, mind and consciousness work together in maintaining balance. Balance is order; imbalance is disorder; Health is order; disease is disorder and they are viewed as different facets of one’s being. Within the body there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. When one understands the nature and structure of disorder, one can re-establish order. Music therapy is studied both as a science and an art. CMTER’s approach to music therapy is holistic, as it strives to bring the mind, body & soul into a state of balance. Music therapy is broadly defined as the “professional use of music and its elements as an intervention in medical, educational and everyday environments with individuals, groups, families or communities who seek to optimize their quality of life and improve their physical, social, communicative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health and wellbeing.” In music therapy, music is presented as an experience and used as a primary medium of communicationby music therapists who are highly skilled in music. The experience creates a therapeutic relationship in which both interpersonal and intrapersonal communication is involved.Music Therapy has a relational approach and health oriented. It can be said that music therapy followsa bio-psycho-social model or to be simpler, has an effect on the biological, psychological and social aspects of living. Modern times expectsan explanation while our traditional way of life was one where no questions were asked. What was given by theour ancestors were taken to be true and followed.Current music therapy is both art and science which ultimately brings us to the point of evidence- based music therapy that is important to connect traditional healing systems to the modern science. India has a rich heritage of traditional healing systems such as nada yoga, raga chikitsa, chakra activation, time theory of ragas, vedic traditions that have been in our country for centuries and have all focused on health and wellbeing. These traditional healing systems have a body of literature that has been brought down through several generations and focus on integrating spirituality all the while addressing the imbalance of the mind, body and spirit towards health. Allof these systems of traditional healing systems have been seen to have applications and outcomes such as sedative or anxiolytic effects, stimulate and energize. Music therapy is the current science of music thatis bringing our traditions to life with research and evidence that may answer many and varied questions making it worthy towards the future wellbeing. World Music therapy is working towards reviving and integrating the traditional healing systems from different parts of the world too. To summarize, Music therapy in SBV is an innovative method into medical care with a focus towards a patient-centered model of holistic care – A salutogenic focusing on factors influencing health and healing instead of factors causing the disease or just the treatment(pathogenesis) Music therapy, as “Salutogenesis”, is the concept of health promotion, disease prevention and management which enables us to work towards holistic health and wellbeing for all. And lastly, this integrative approach bridges traditional and modern approaches to healthcare in the form of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCI) enables us to serve everyone in a more efficient, cost effective and patient friendly manner. Music therapy in SBV uses this holistic model to work along side an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, other allied health care professionals to deliver treatment in wholesome manner and help patients recuperate in a more comfortable manner. Thank you.
